Family News Friday

We recently checked in with the Kadey family to find out how their summer is progressing. The answer? Not quite as they had planned.

July started off well with a lovely Independence Day. The family attended the cardboard boat races for the first time and enjoyed watching some spectacular sinkings.

They attended their local parade which stocked up the children with enough candy to last until Halloween.

And the evening was topped off by a fabulous fireworks display at the lake which Erin would have enjoyed much more had she not been allergic to the grass she was forced to sit on for hours on end.

In other news, Erin has developed a sudden desire to redecorate her home. Now that she is no longer depressed, she wants to surround herself with bright happy colors. Her family is afraid. Very afraid. Also, Erin has given up sugar in her diet, and she desperately needs something to occupy her mind besides donuts. In the future you can look forward to Makeover Mondays which will alternate with Make a Difference Mondays, and showcase her thrifty projects around the home.

And finally, we learned of the Kadey family's less than stellar trip to Seattle. Things started off well with a day at the Woodland Park Zoo. The weather was perfect, the animals were active, and not once did any child complain of being tired, hungry or hot. The evening was spent at the Best Western where everyone had a good night's sleep after segregating Kian (a.k.a. "Tooth Grinder Extraordinaire") from earshot of the rest of the family.

The next day the Kadey's headed for Richmond Beach to meet up with Roger's brother and family. All five of their kids were going to be there (and with most of them being teenagers, that was an incredible feat), and the Kadey's were excited to see them for the first time in over a year. The Kadey's arrived at the meeting point first, and began to head down the paved path to the beach. At some point, Erin turned to speak to her youngest child and didn't notice that part of the path had crumbled away. Her right foot slipped off the path, her left ankle twisted in a way that no ankle is meant to twist, and she rolled spectacularly several feet down the hill. Having a high pain threshhold, Erin bravely rose and was helped up the path by her husband while insisting that she should be allowed to continue down to the beach. Her husband, being an intelligent man, calculated how much work it would take to half-carry his wife back up the hill in several hours and vetoed his wife's suggestion.

The Kadeys called their relatives and chose to meet at another beach that did not have a steep access path. Erin was determined not to let her injury disrupt their plans. She was dropped off near the beach and hopped to a spot where she sat for the next several hours visiting with the family. Then came the moment when she had to walk back to the car. Surrounded by throngs of ogling bystanders, she spent the next 20 minutes attempting to cross a distance of a few hundred feet with an ankle that had swollen up to twice it's size.

The Kadeys began the long drive home from Seattle and all was well until Erin needed to use the restroom. Since she could no longer place any weight on her ankle, and she was without the assistance of crutches, they searched unsuccessfully for a bathroom with an outside entrance. They ended up at a 7-11 where she hopped on one foot through the entire store yelling "OW!" with each painful step, and grabbing onto various display shelves which very nearly toppled over. The poor gentleman behind the cash register wasn't sure if he should laugh or call an ambulance. It was easily one of the most embarrassing moments of Erin's life.

The next day Erin made the trip to the doctor and found out that she had fractured her fibula. She was fitted with a walking boot and a pair of crutches and told to visit the orthopedist in a week or so when the swelling goes down. As a result, Roger and Erin's were forced to cancel their getaway to the beach and reschedule for September, and Erin has had the privilege of being forced to sit immobile on the couch without a laptop while watching her house slowly turn into a candidate for Hoarders: Buried Alive.

Tune in next week to find out how many episodes of Family Feud Erin has racked up.....
